Taking the form of a sprawling installation, a video work and an album, recorded on site, Jonah Freeman, Justin Lowe and Jennifer Herrema’s Scenario In The Shade was a project based off a book of amateur ethnographic studies on the youth subcultures of Southern California. The collection, compiled and edited by journalist Elizabeth Stone, is a tour through 150 years of marginalized and often dissenting groups. Behaviors, patterns and power structures are chronicled in a collage of unconstructed data, half finished studies and, in certain cases, pure fiction.

At the center of the exhibition, Freeman and Lowe construct a new film that explores a selection of narratives from the book through a mise-en-scène comprised strictly of objects and environments. Accompanying the film and exhibition was a sonic mash-up concocted and compiled by Jennifer Herrema who has pulled together a veritable bitches brew of contributors that include Neil Hagerty, Bobby Gillespie, MGMT, Lizzi Bougatsos, Alexis Taylor and Kurt Vile to name a few. This functioned as both soundtrack to the film and the spatial audio mix within the installation environments.

Collaborators: Devendra Banhart, Lizzi Bougatsos (I.U.D.), Kurt Vile, Jennifer Herrema, Kurt Midness with Brian McKinley and Nadav Eisenman (Royal Trux, RTX, Black Bananas), Neil Hagerty (Royal Trux, Howling Hex, NMH), Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden (MGMT), Simon O’Connor (Simon Doom), Bobby Gillespie/Andrew Innes (Primal Scream), Mario Rubalcaba (OFF, Earthless), Grant Garretson and H.R.
